    Stepper selection for Raptor 24

    Howdy all,

I'm planning on purchasing a Raptor 24" (square rail) machine in the next few weeks and being a noob to all this, I'd like some advice/discussion regarding stepper selection for this machine.

Sounds like the options from George are 386oz or 425oz. I understand that it's a bit more complicated than "bigger is better" but beyond "it's not just bigger is better" I have little clue.

I'll be using a Gecko 540 for control and will have a 18krpm 1.5hp VFD Spindle mounted up. And I'll mostly be machining wood with occasional Al and some plastics.

Speed will be kind of important as I'd like the parts to come off the machine as finished as possible in a reasonable amount of time but honestly I don't know if I can expect to run this stuff at full speeds being such a noob.

    What would you do?

I'm a big fan of the systems that are sold at http://www.candcnc.com/

I am using one of their BladeRunner AIO systems. This system is as turnkey as you can get for the motors and controllers. Lots of inputs, lots of outputs, current limiting built into the driver controllers. They sell a 3 axis, 620oz NEMA 23 system for $845 and its well worth the cost. They have a tech support forum, and a number to call a human.

The motors with the lower inductance will tend to be the best performing.

Thanks Gerry. I'm thinking I'm probably going to go with the 387oz motors. I'm going up to TO to check it out in two weeks and should have it at my house a week or so after that if you're interested in checking it out.
