Resistor 2 is not neccessary, even the 4.7k may not be either depending on the driver on the printer port.
But the pull up will help avoiding damage by spurious noise at plug in. If I think there may be a problem with noise I have also put a 9~12v zener from fet gate to ground. Also if 12v relay is more readily available you could use the PC 12v supply for the relay.

Thank you very much for the info!

So you're saying that in a noise free environment an inexpensive 12 Volt coil relay could be controlled via the parallel port with the following super simple circuit?
No wonder you like those 2N7000 FETlingtons!

i just bought this relay off ebay. can someone tell me what size resistor i need to get for it?

These SSR usually draw about 10ma on 5v so you should not need a resistor.

teilhardo, thanks for your tutorial.

I have made it into a Pdf file. Would it be alright to have it as a perminant file on the Zone? You would get full credit for it and it would still retain links to your site.
