    Need advice on broken SX3

    Hi.

I went to use the mill this weekend (Grizzly G0619 SX3) and had a problem.

Powered up okay but when I started the motor there were two loud pops and then (literally) sparks starting shooting out of the back, along with obligatory smell that usually accompanies such sparks.

I took the back off and it looks like the motor board is fried (the little board that attaches physically looks okay).

I called Grizzly and the cost of the board is ~$275 but they won't have any stock until the end of December. Also, since the unit is out of warranty, if the new board fries because of some other problem then I eat the cost. *bummer*.

There appears to be no other service option with Grizzly. You basically buy the parts and take your chances.

I'm looking for some advice here. A new mill is $1300 + shipping. If I order the board and wait there is no guarantee that something else is not causing the problem. The motor seems to turn okay (by hand), not seized.

Had anyone else had similar problems? Does replacing the motor board generally work in these cases? The rest of the unit is in terrific shape with very little use other than the CNC conversion last year. Any other ideas?

    Thank you very much

If this is the BLDC motor and controller then the motor is most likely OK, one check is to measure the 3 windings and also check them for a ground.

replacing a POS board with another POS board is insanity; unless u like sparks

I changed mine on the X3 with a KBIC-125. GREAT BOARD. no need to throw 1300 at a 150 problem either :-)

I have seen several threads about replacing the motor and controller, I think, in the SX3. may be a compatible better-board, or time to upgrade to a vfd and motor.

there are members here with motor and controller for sale also.

Thank you very much for your responses.

Al, I will check the motor as you have indicated. I should have thought about that.

A different motor/board was something that I had thought about last evening. I saw a brushless controller/motor from Keling but after contacting them it doesn't seem to be available..

I will check into the KBIC-125. Most of the threads I have read here deal with a new motor for the X3, but not the SX3. I will check the KBIC-125 and see if I can make that work.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

KBIC-125 is for a DC brushed motor, it won't work if you have a BLDC motor (3 stator windings).

    parts

I recieved the parts yesterday and it was all in good shape.
I noticed that you sent the hardware for the gas springor shock drill and tap. This was extra and thanks now Maybe I can find a shock to fit like CNC Fusion has.
    thanks again
