Need X3 CNC conversion input please

I'll be using the CNC Fusion Deluxe kit for the mechanics.

I contacted Keling for recommendations for an X3 CNC conversion-parts recommendations. The parts he suggested are below. I was a little surprised no Gecko drivers were recommended. I'd appreciate any feedback from the forum before committing to this purchase.

I will be using flood-coolant and hope to do a belt drive conversion for higher spindle speeds. I'm mainly cutting .090" 6061 aluminum sheet and engraving acrylic plastics with a .020 end mill. I will also be using the MPG2 pendant.

I thought the G540 would handle both the coolant pump signal as well as the spindle control, along with it's fantastic reputation. I trust Keling since many folks here use them, but I thought I'd check here for any additional input.

    Thanks for your feedback.

The 540 is a bit of a none starter because of the 906 0z-in stepper.
Assuming you intend to wire it in parallel it's peak current is 6.1A and the 540 will only supply up to 3.5A of phase current, so you would be well short of the rated 906 oz-in.
You have to go with 201 or 203 drivers from Gecko.

Would the 201 or 203 offer any advantages to the ones listed?

    Thanks

The 906 oz stepper works fine with the G540, It is what I have been using for over a year now. It detunes to 520oz. but with pulley reduction on the Z
1.23 to 1 it brings it back up to 640oz. and you can expect 150-200 ipm rapids with this set-up.
So save yourself some time as well as wiring and get yourself a G540
Also check out Creavice Reamers site as he has a lot of good info on converting this mill among other things including electronics.

Here is a link to my SX3 build

Good luck to you and dont hesitate to ask questions here as there are many individuals who have quite a bit of knowledge and experience here on the zone that are more than willing to help out.

This is false information...take a look at Hossmachine Homepage and ‪hossmachine's Channel‬‏ - YouTube his has been running for years on the 540

Err from Hoss' site he converted an X2 isn't using a 906oz stepper or a G540.

My point was only if you run a 906 Oz stepper that takes a peak current of 6.1A from a controller that can only supply 3.5A, you won't see 906 Oz, more like 540 Oz. If that's fine for an X3 go for it. I just don't see the point of buying a 906oz-in stepper to get 540oz-in out of it.

I have a G540 I like it a lot, but I'm only driving 270Oz-in steppers off it, I'm going with the kelling drivers for my G0704 conversion because they output enough current to drive the 570oz steppers.

You are correct sir. After going back and looking at his page I realize I was looking at...Note: Kelinginc now have a new kit with the recently introduced Geckodrive G540 4 Axis driver,
    (4) 381 oz/in motors and 48 Volt power supply. This would provide a bit more speed but at more $.

I saw G540 and got mixed up with 2 other browser tabs on motors I was researching...sincerest apologies.

Note to self...when replying to forums close all other tabs if you cant multitask Lol

I took the Crevice Reamer route on my X3 CNC Fusion conversion with the g540 and found that it wasn't enough power output for my mill, I kept getting lost steps/ binding. I would recommend either what Keling recommends or higher output Geckos (201, 203,etc.) Keling has good support and so does Gecko, Geckos are domestically made if thats a factor for you. The g540 seems to work for some but it didn't do the trick for me, maybe my mill was a little too worn from a couple of years manual use prior to the conversion. Also, you might want to run some lube lines to the ballnuts, they will need oil periodically but aren't really accessible. Check the Z-axis for backlash as well, X3's are known to have poorly fitted tapered gibs that cause the head to nod, which was the case with mine. Good luck!

    Thanks for all the replies.

I've decided that an X3 conversion isn't for me. I think I'll save some more money and buy a Tormach 770. I'll just have to live with the smaller X-travel.

I still have my round-column mill to size long work-pieces. I guess I'll write two programs, and move the material in the machine as needed to reach it all.

If the business does okay, the Tormach can be replaced with a small VMC.

    Thanks again.
