Hello:
I am having a problem with my Chick vises.
I am using 4 dual Chick vises, MLQ 1040. It seems that when I go to clamp my parts, one side of each station pushes up my part by .015", and so I get a screwed up part, that is not parallel. I called Chick and they that either my D-holes in the slide assembly are worn lose or my pins are worn down.
So I am in the process of taking my Chick vises apart and cleaning everything.
My question is, is there a way to add a shim in the D-hole to take up any slack ? Or is there another way to solve this problem ?
Any help or tips would greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

If you're holding a fairly large part stick a rod (I use a scrap piece of 1" steel bar) between the moving vice chuck and the part being held. This will stop the part rising.Or is there another way to solve this problem

I love deadlines- I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.
That is an interesting idea. My parts are small and thin. In my Chick vises I have milled a 0.1" pocket, so there is not much room to stick a rod in there.
I did follow Chick's advise, and that was to clean everything. Well in the process on doing that I discovered what my problem was. It was mainly with my stationary jaw.
It seems that the 2 metal inserts in the vise had bonded into a some trash. So I cleaned some of that out and very slightly pushed those inserts down. Now, everything is leval as it should be. So I just saved myself over 1000 dollars from having to buy new slide assemblies.

I clean my chicks down to the base every set up to avoid this![]()
You should always keep your chicks clean, the last thing you want to find someones elses chips when you open her jaws to put in your part..
I have had the opposite problem of the pins being too tight (We make our own jaw blanks). When cleaning everything doesn't work I ream out the hole in the soft jaw. You might try milling a bit off the bottom of the jaws, that will bring the pin hole down and tighten up the D hole.
