    Rotational lock on a shaft

I have a ¼ steel shaft going through a brass bushing press fit into 1/4” aluminum.

I need to both lock the shaft to prevent rotation AND not move the shaft during locking. The shaft needs to rotate when un locked.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Does there exist something like a bushing that can allow shaft to rotate and also lock it down?

I was thinking about just drilling and tapping a hole directly above the bushing - in the aluminum block - and then put in a small thumb wheel screw to compress the bushing against the shaft - think that would damage the bushing over time?

This is not high rotational speed just a little adjustment jig - but the shaft will be recieviing some torque during use...

    Thanks.

A Cam-lock level mechanism against the shaft you are trying to lock would probably serve you better, since a thumbscrew will eventually chew up the shaft. Some wear will also occur using a Cam lock, if excessive forced is used to close the lock. However, Cam-locks work very well, if you are able to also utilize a flat plate onto the shaft, against which the cam-lock is applied. (Think Disc Brakes on your car).
