I could be doing wrong, but so far quite successful use HSS 45-55 mills processing different tropical woods like mahagony, sapely, etc.
You can get them for small $ on Ebay for ~ 5.50 US per 3mm mill, which looks to be ok for me ;-)

Can I use HSS endmills for machining wood? Or do I need a special material endmills designed just for wood?

Carbide tooling would be preffered by any woodworker.

Can I use carbide for aluminum also or just strictly for wood?
Yes, you can use carbide for aluminum too.
