What kind of tool? With a good 2 flute upcut spiral, 1/4-3/8 depth, 18K RPM and 120-150ipm.

The tool is what I am in need of, just has to be 1/4" dia and a shank no larger than 3/8". I was looking at the upcut spirals but wasn't sure if that was what I needed. Thanks for the reply!![]()

You may also want to try a downcut. Upcut's can leave a fuzzy edge, but tend to last longer than a downcut.

Thanks for the advice, I'll order the tooling today. I am not worried about a fuzzy edge because I will be rounding over all the edges. I found this tool that is half upcut half downcut, http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shops.../bt_solid.html
it's the next to last item, any thoughts?

Only use a compression spiral if cutting out the parts in one pass. Not sure if you have enough power to do that.

You should have no problem cutting oak.
your screws are the main thing slowing you down. steppers have lots of torque at low speed, but don't like high rpm.
you may have some screw whip that is part of your vibration.
If you run the machine at 25 ipm, I would try the router at slow speed to start 10-12k rpm. 1/4" upcut spiral, 1/4" depth of cut.
If the router bogs, reduce the depth of cut. If the wood burns, turn down the router speed, or up the ipm machine travel.
Cut some scrap first if you are unsure.
Here is some more info on cutters and feeds and speeds.

Any one tried v-cutting oak with v-groove cutter . I get decent result but difficulty in consistant clean cut . Seem to have variation , cutting cleanly certain place not the other. C.V. mode is active speed is constant.
I`m now thinking about too long distance from router to gantry causing vibration...or when cutting with / against the wood grain?
