The easiest place is Home Depot or Lowes, they usually stock both 1/2" and 3/4" in 4 x 8 sheets. Different areas may carry different sizes. Our Home Depot also has 1/4", but only in 2x4 sheets.

Lumberyards might be able to get you sizes from 1/4" thick to 1" thick, maybe thicker, and sizes up to 5x10 or 5x12.

I got a 2 x 2 x 3/4" panel at Menards that had birch veneer on both sides. I have not tried on my machine yet but I did a test cut with my Dermial tool and a 1/8" ball end bit, on a small piece to see how it would finish. Looks great! I'm thinking a person could do a carving and leave the outside edge un - cut for a frame.
