    Yet another feedrate question

I have been reading about feedrates here but still have a question. Could someone tell me the optimal spindle speed to use for solid oak with a 1/4" up spiral limited to 100 ipm? Also what depths can attain without too much trouble? I am actually cutting shapes out of 3/4 oak.

Varies depending on the brand, but my Onsrud catalog calls for a chip load of .005-.007 for a 1/4" spiral, which would be ~7,500-10,000 rpm, at 1/4" depth of cut. For 1/2" depth of cut, increase rpm to about 14,000.

How deep you can cut depends on how well built your machine is. Use trial and error to find out what works best for you and your machine.

As long as you have a powerful spindle, follow Ger's advice. A weaker spindle can't keep the RPMs up when the chipload gets heavy. The RPMs go down, the chipload gets even heavier, and the bit breaks. Especially true with little 1/4" bits.
