Try spindle speed low and feedrate high.
What are the actual numbers you're using?
You should be around 12000-15000 rpm and 3000-5000mm/min.
I am (trying!!) to cut out one of those dinosaur puzzles for my daughter, machine all set up and good to go...cutting 6mm mdf...using a 6mm cutter...tried a two flute straight carbide and burnt it out...tried a 3 flute spiral end mill up cut and it did the same...what am I doung wrong...got spindle speed high and feed speed moderate...Help

Thanks...will try in morning....which cutter would you recommend?
Either one, but you should use an even higher feedrate with the 3 flute.

I would try to use a down cutter with 6mm MDF and a compression cutter for 10mm and over . As ger21 said a faster feed rate. you dont want to make dust, you want to make chips
Ok...thanks for that...next question...as I am a virgin with this thing...how is the best way to change the feed rate...i have the motor tuning set so that every thing moves accordingly ( when it says 10mm on mach3 it moves 10mm)...I tried the FRO..increeased it to 150%..it cut a tiny bit faster but when it moved to rapid height for next cut it stuttered and I lost about 30mm in the Y axis...should I change the feed rate in the tool or go through the motor tuning again..I was told the values to put in on the machine when I bought it, which are 160-1200-20...whatever this means
Right...the feedrate...I have been in workshop playin with the motor tuning and can get the x axis up to 2400mm/min running smooth...but as for the y axis..I can only get this up to 1500mm/min..anymore and the motor spins and the gantry stalls...could the coupling from the motor to the thread be slipping or is this common.....seems strange that I can't get anywhere near the 3000mm/min feed rate...when they move it shows in the mach3 feed screen and the one above (FRO) shows 60...would this be down to the tool data?
What you're seeing is the motors stalling. Steppers lose torque as there speed increases, and you're reaching the point where they can't go any faster.
You can try making sure everything is well lubricated, and see if that helps. Can you post some specs on your machine?

What do you need...I know the x/z have nema23 and the y has nema34 motors the stepper board is a 3A one....dimensions are 610x x 1700y x 125z
not sure if this helps...thankyou
Picture of your machine and burnt part? If you feel you can't lower the spindle speed enough (because of your feedrate limit) you might have to get a bit with less flutes, a 2 flute or even a 1 flute bit. I use a 1 flute bit on a lot of wood and mdf stuff, they cut pretty clean and you can run them at high rpms....
The cutter you should be using is a sprial downcutter
always cut in 2 passes 1st pass 5.5mm 2nd pass 6.1mm
hope this helpes
As timberman says, the more passes the better, 3 passes is adequate.
Are you using cheap bits?
