Very good, at my old school we had a 30 x30 Redcam, but now at my new school we just got a new General. Making checker boards for the grade 9's and signs for 10s and clocks for 11s. Grade 12 can make detail work. I have posted some of my students work in the gallery.

Have you got any pics posted?

Nah.. The davinci mill only has a bed 10.1" x 11.6". The controller has an old serial interface and it is really slow on any job with a curve. The combination of the size and speed make the mill hard to use with the 7th and 8th graders. The one saving grace is the Galaad software package we use with it. We paid $400 and we are able to use the design software on every machine in the school! Another good feature is that it is integrated with the mill. On a simple name engraving project, I can run all 24 kids through in one 45 min period!

One neat project we do is a marble maze. Its made from a 10" square board with cnc'd slots and holes that we fit 3/4" tall strips into. We have the 8th graders design in autosketch and import the DDR into Galaad where we create tool paths and mill.

I once did a simple cd rack project with a carved warrior head in one side. It took 11min to mill one and it was only 2"x3"! I did the same tool path at home on one of my machines and it took 3 min.

If I remember I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Well any CNC machine is better than not having one at all. I was working at a school for a semester that had a Davinci mill, I showed the teacher how to use Coreldraw to make vector files then transfer them to a simple CNC program, from there we cut out some really neat signs on scrape Corian.

    HEY OHHH!!!

I've got a Fireball Comet and a V90 on the way. Couldn't afford anything bigger (or better), you know the budget deal. Also have a 60W CO2 LASER coming this year too.

Hopefully will be fully operational by the fall. Where do you guys purchase bits? I need 1/4" shank.

We get our bits from mcmaster.com. They are not the cheapest. In fact I think they are twice as much as some bargain eBay bits I mostly purchase for home. However they do take purchase orders and the bits ship overnight for the price of regular postage!

Thanks Pplug. I'll check them out. I don't need much, but maybe I can squeeze out some grant money and get a decent order.
