Default Flattening / planing hardwoods - best bits?

Today I flattened a walnut slab with Onsrud’s 1.25” spoilboard cutter. I know it’s the wrong bit, but I wanted to give it a try. The good news is that the slab is nice and flat. Bad news is that it took forever and the tooling marks are prominent and a surprisingly huge pain to sand out.

I’m looking at the Amana rc-2551 or the new rc-2255, which Amana claims can plunge 1/4” and then surface. Any experience with them? Other ideas? I’m looking for the best finish first and foremost; but obviously efficiency matters too.

I have a ShopBot PRS standard with an HSD 2.2 spindle. Max 1/2” shank.

    Thanks!

The best finish would come from a planer. A router is not the right tool if finish is the most important objective.
Make sure your spindle is perfectly trammed, if you want to minimize tool marks.

I plan on picking up one of those new Amana bits, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I agree, but I can’t plane anything larger than 13” wide and don’t plan on investing in a large format planer. The spindle is square. You can’t feel the tool marks — no ridges.

You could try slightly rounding the corners of the carbide cutters with a fine diamond stone.
