    DIY Cheap Multiple Alternator Welder

Not mine but this is great! Had to pass it on!! This guy has (4) 60 amp alternators running off a 16hp engine..

    Check out this video:

I want to build something like this. I have been doing a lot of searching for this type of setup. And after many upon many forums poo-pooing the idea. I am glad to see it does work and pretty well.

My reason for wanting to do this setup is $$. First off it is cheap.

I do not have a 220v line for the more powerful and expensive plugin welders. The 90amp Harbor Freight or similars 110v just don't have the power for most jobs.

The problem with using 1 alternator is that it has to be a High Output Alternator..which is very expensive. Plus, from what I have read is with multiple alternators you get a better performance at Idle. So, you don't have to rev up the engine so much.

So, like his setup of (4) 60 amp alternators make the machine capable of 240 amp output...Awesome!

    Here is his write up:

off road guys were among the first to make this popular, it was a way of having an on-board arc welder for road-side repair without having to carry a generator and buzz box. I thought it was a great idea.

Looks like it could be fun to build something similar!

I built one using a 16HP pressure washer motor I got off of eBay.
Sold the pressure washer pump for 2/3 of what I paid.
Used the cart & Honda 16HP motor.
It's been a great 150 watt DC welder & built a 3 wheel car using it.

True!!! Also, they use only 1 alternator to power the welder. The other standard alternator is used as normal.

They do not link several alternators "in parallel" to get more amps. I have seen where they even have 4 alternators running in the vehicle but they are not linked in parallel.

Great Job.. But Zena sells you 1 high output alternator to connect to your engine. That 1 alternator is 150amps and also costs $795 !!!

    I am getting (2) 130amp alternators for $35 each = $70 and I will have around 260 amps.

That is the whole point of me posting this...is that you can build a high powered welder and ever portable for under $200!!

Now that is 4 times less than what you paid for the Zena welder which you still had to have the engine for it as well.

The under $200 still includes an engine. I got a 13hp for $45 and seen a 18.5hp for $70. They are all around used as you know for cheap. and so are the alternators.
