    TIG welding Steel/Iron welding with Argon?

    Hi,
    I usually weld aluminum so I have 2 125 Argon gas tanks. But occasionally I need to weld some iron, can I get away with using my Argon or do I really need a C02 mixture tank.. Thanks!

    using Miller Syncrowave TIG 250

    It works, but you burn more money than needed. I always weld with "Mison" gas mix.

    TIG welding is almost always done with pure argon, regardless of what is being welded. CO2 and other mixes are used with MIG welding of ferous metals.

    All the TIG I've ever done has been with argon, though I've heard of rare applications where helium or other more exotic gases are used in small concentrations to aid in penetration or other weld characteristics.

    I have used only Argon with both Syncrowave 250 and Dynasty 200's in tig mode. This includes Steel, Stainless and Aluminum.

    Good luck

    Actually I missed the "TIG" word in the title of this thread last time I responded. But anyway, CO2 is mostly used to save money when MIG/MAG-welding (that's the MAG-part). I never change, I always go with one good tank than two different as it will be more expensive to lease two gas tanks (we have leasing and not own-by-yourself-tanks here) than running everything with one gas-mix and refill more frequently.

    You've already got the answer, two Argon is better than one Ag and one CO2.

    It has already been said above but I will add to it --TIG = ARGON.
