carbide cutters

I don't deal with carbide much so this is going to sound stupid,
I have two Carboloy tool holders that take the triangular carbide cutters,
the marking is TFL-16-4 for size, it looks like SECO-Carboloy either changed
their ID system or stopped makeing this size....
anyone know how to read their page and what I'm looking for?

Thanks,

Allen <><

Most use carbide cutters but I have absolutely no clue how to answer your question. Sorry.

Most commonly, a tool holder with a "T" in it will likely take a triangular insert. Also, the "16" usually means it's a 1" square shank, and the "4" most often denotes that it accepts a 4-size (1/2" I.C.) insert.

You can help be sure of what you need by looking at the pocket into which the insert is clamped. If the bottom surface if it is perfectly level and parallel with the bottom surface of the tool and the sides of the pocket have angles of about 11°, it takes a "TPG" 422 type insert. If the bottom of the insert pocket is tilting downward to the outside edge of the shank and has sides of the pcket that are perpendicular to the bottom and most often with a carbide seat and a center eccentric screw-post and often a clamp coming over the top of the insert, it's a negative rake holder using TNMG/TNMN/TNGP styles of inserts. Some styles of holders use a side-pushing type of clamping system rather than the top clamp, but those will always have the center post for the hole in the negative rake inserts.

The most common triangular inserts in that I.C. size will be the negative rake style of inserts, therefore...

You probably need to buy inserts with the designation "TNMG 432 xx" in whatever grade is appropriate for the material you're cutting. Also, the last number (2) in the 43 part of the insert designation is the insert's tool nose radius value as measured in 1/64th's on an inch, so it could be a 1, 2, 3, or 4.

The "xx" that I put in there represents the insert manufacturer's code for the top-form geometery (a.k.a. "chipbreaker"), so it could be any combination of letters and/or numbers. The one you choose will be dependent upon the insert manufacturer, the material you're cutting, the depth of cut and feed rate used.

Post a close-up of the holder and it'll tell more than all my words. Hope this helps.

I suspect that the numbers you posted are from the tool holder not for the inserts ! I tried to find something on it but to no avail. You will have to track down the cutter then find the inserts which are appropriate for it. The numbers are a way of describing the tool and or inserts. So if you can find the descriptor chart then you can read what it is you have.

He has stated the nomenclature is from the holder, or at least that's the way I took it.

I really looks like the OP has a holder for negative rake TNxx style inserts. I think Allen may have a side-lock style holder, and/or has missed posting at least one letter in the nomenclature.

I was just looking at Valenite's turning catalog, and they show three likely crossovers. One is the side-locking LTFL 16, another is a ("multi-option" type) holder is a MTFNL 16-4C or MTFNL 16-4D. One of those is a 5" overall length, the other is a 6" O.A.L.

All of them orient the insert in such a way that the holder can really only be used for facing operations. I believe that's what the "F" denotes.
