Unhappy Where to buy a "Charge Pump" in the USA

    Hi,

I need to know who sells "Charge Pumps" to use with Artsoft Mach 3 machining software.

I have been buying them from CNC4PC, but the last 5 don't work! They must be having problems.

    Thanks,

    Buck

    This is a joke right?

A charge pump is a circuit in a breakout board that usually prevents the computer from rogue activation of the control electronics before Mach is in control.

All of the top name break out boards have them.

A charge pump is where the credit card company sends you interest rate to when you make a late payment.

Many breakout boards have the charge pump circuit built in so that when the computer is starting up you don't get any crazy moves.

    Hi Cr,

No joke! i have been using these for years! Check this link!
    http://www.cnc4pc.com/Store/osc/prod...products_id=51

I know what it is for, i built about 50 of these controls with step and direction that use Mach 3, using Rutex, Gecko, Larken, AMC, Yaskawa, and Industrial Device Inc drives.

    Thanks,
    Buck

Have you contacted Arturo Duncan? I'd be surprised if he would want to ignore this....

    Hi CKM,

Yes, i ask him to check the last 3 i just bought because the 2 before that were bad. He obvisouly didnt check them out.

I am e mailing him again, and enclosing pictures so he can see my wiring. I havn't even hooked up the big power to the panel yet, i was just testing the 5&12 volt system first.

Well, he's always been very responsive. The chargepump is not that complicated of a circuit, all the magic is in the chip (and even that's VERY simple). Although you probably don't want to, you could make one yourself.
[Edit: and here's a link to one (PDF): http://www.artofcnc.ca/ChargePumpSafety.pdf ]

I also think that you might get a better set of responses from the Mach forums.

You might also check out my list of suppliers here:

Don't know off the top of my head who else makes these, but still...

    Chris.

P.S. If you are making this many units, it would be good for you to draw up some wiring diagrams......

SOme folks opt and still opt to try to pull power ut of an LPT port. Even though a lot of LPT port project writers indicate that this is a bad idea (you can only pull so much power), folks still try to do so - and sometimes suffer as a result.

You may not have faulty charge pumps, YOU MAY BE ASKING FOR TOO MUCH POWER.

Charge pumps are typically used to generate a REFERENCE level voltage. ALthough you may have 5v, 12v, -12 whatever, this does not mean that you can run much off of it. Reference voltages only need a few milliamps, you'd be lucky to get enough to run an led off of some of he 555 based charge pumps I"ve seen.

The picutures don't tell you much, you need to submit the schematic to make any circuit diagnostics possible

    Try google for "charge pump".

Bur first, take any "load" off of the charge pumps you have. See if that doesn't help at last show voltage on your VOM.

If you're trying to run a load of ANY substance from your charge pump circuit, simply get some wall bugs - keep in mind, even they have current output limits too..

Was the issue with the charge pumps ever resolved? I bought two springlakecnc boards but have never been able to get the limit switches to work on the second board even though they are on identical Bridgeports!

There is no mystery about 'charge pumps' they traditionally have been called Watch Dog Timers and you can build one for a $1. from a 555 IC.

Well thats just great. Now all I have to do is find a 555ic for .99 cents and all my troubles will be solved.
