    Lathe

I am in need of some help, I have a 1340 Jet lathe (not CNC) Can someone tell me what the feed levers and knobs do. I know they seem to speed up or slow down the carriage travel but what position should they be for just turning a peice of steel or aluminum?. I don't know what is going on. Never had a lathe before. I think I have decent turning tools (from MSC) When I am turning stock I get these little lines or grooves and if I try to sand them out my peice ends up to small. I am using the right tool and have tried both feed directions with the same results. Surely this cannot be this hard. Thank's for any input
