I don't think that desktop laser cutters are designed for steel. They are mostly used for cutting plastics, like acrylic, or thin organic materials (plywood, cardboard, leather) and engraving on glass. You need a special setup for metals; if not a fiber laser, then at least one with the right optics (so the reflected beam doesn't damage the machine itself) the right wavelength, and a gas assist.

Sorry for the necro, but I'd recommend you take a look at laserstar.net

Their solution can do 2.5D in hardened steel. I visited the factory and was quite impressed.
