I have a basic oval that I need to pocket. My end mill is not a center cut end mill so I need to ramp in. I created the following Gcode and I don't understand why the tool is returning to 1" on line 101 and then starting the ramp over in the positive Z wasting a bunch of time

If you want VisualMill help - we need to see VisualMill part file and/or screen shots and a description of what you did and what your part looks like.
G-code is useless as all post processors are 100% customizable.

I thought you could back plot the Gcode and see what the tool path was doing. The problem is not in the drawing, it is somewhere in one of the boxes that I have to fill in when I am setting up the parameters. I have three screen captures showing each tab.

If you were using MasterCAM I would say your Z clearance is set too high, assuming the top of the part is Z0.000, I would try somthing about 0.005.
I have my clearance plane set at .250", part top at 0.00". The porblem is at line n101 where the tool lifts to 1.00" wasting a bunch of time.

Back plotting code only gives what Andre has shown, it has NO idea what you have programmed.
I was thinking entry/exit or skim clearance settings, but they appear OK.
Best bet for us is if you attach the vcp file. This might be in your post processor as well.
What version and build release are you using?
BTW - I hate 2d pocketing MOP, especially for simple, single geometry. I always use profile instead. Maybe it is just my stupid head, but that is my preference

I am using VM 5.0,11,11 with a Centroid post. I agree that Andre has back plotted and shown the first lines of the code but the problem is in line 101, so if he or you could back plot a little past that, or just look at the Gcode itself you will see the Z1.0. I also prefer profiling to pocketing but the cutter will leave a small island in the middle of the pocket that can get grabbed by the cutter and might break the cutter when it get jammed up against the wall. I could not upload the VMP file because it is not an accepted file format so I uploaded it as a DXF. All I am doing it pocketing the inside to that oval with a .490" cutter that does not center cut.
1) There is no dispute about the line 101. The point is that a back plot does absolutely nothing to show you/us where the programming issue is in VisualMill.
2) I cannot test your settings for you because I am on a different version and it would be pointless.
3) Contact support at MecSoft to see if: A) you have the current service pack.
B) Why it is doing that.

BTW - I would easily profile that in VM6 with your cutter and the right tweaks, However I do not remember if VM5 had 3D entry available as VM6 pro does.

why cant you just change your z height lower so it doesnt take as long
the problem tennsmith, if you look at line 193,307,420,534,648,763 they all have a return to clearance and all of them are different. If I were running a single part that was simple it would be OK, but sometimes I run programs that are over 300,000 lines of code and the return to clearance waist tons of time on those long ones.
