It lives!

I wasn't sure where to put this, but my project did its first proper CNC job on tuesday.

I have been using it to make its own parts typing in G-code live line by line for a while now, but this was running from an actual G-Code file.

The machine is drilling the holes in the PCB which will be its spindle speed controller. This is a 2-channel PWM to 0-10V board with additional relay contacts, three parallel port lines give me lathe spindle speed and 2 directions and milling head speed and on/off. If this is of any use to anyone else, just ask.

I ended up writing some code to convert Excellon (mils) to Gcode (mm) in GNU Octave. My brain nearly melted getting round the PCB artwork mirrored and lathe positive-left negative-up combinations. Again, free to anyone who wants it.

Looking at the video, any cunning suggestions for leadscrew covers? the Y-axis cover is a stolen, cunning design (here) but the X needs something too.
Has anyone tried making their own telescopic spring covers from shim roll?

Nice!

Go to a motorcycle shop and look for replacement fork boot covers for a dirt bike. I was looking at some the other day: 2 in a box for $29.95. Rubber belows.

Cheers,

BW
