no through hole? is that important to you?
I'm wanting to design my own cnc lathe and the spindle is the trickiest part. I was thinking maybe I could start with something like this?
This is a Powermatic 27 shaper 3/4 inch spindle assembl
Any thoughts?

What's the runout spec?
while we're on the topic, what about a 4wd truck front spindle and hub. It even has a through hole and easily adjustable bearings.
Any thoughts?
I guess it all comes down to how accurate you want to get.

I don't know that I mind the no thru hole. I have no idea what the runout spec is. I was more concerned with the ability to take the side load.
Even though I'm not trying to build a machine that holds + .0005, I don't think axle spindles would be accurate enough. I don't know becuase I've never seen or measure one but my intuition is that they would not be.
I can almost guarantee that axle's will be way too sloppy for what you need, and I would guess that you would want a thru hole.... that spindle in the picture doesn't appear to have one.

how big a lathe are you making?
