    Supermax YCM-40 Fagor 8020 to Mach3

Ok well I guess this is about the right time to start this. First off im totaly new to this forum as a member, but Iv been soaking up the info in these forums for some time now. Im a 24 year old apprentice toolmaker out of new haven ct, and have been after a good donor mill for this conversion for a while. Recently I found one, an 89 supermax ycm 40, and the time has come to start the process.

Ok so that out of the way heres my plan. I intend to build a computer inside the old fagor control box hanging off the side of the machine, parallel ports are not an issue being that i plan to throw a pretty hefty motherboard in there. I will also be installing a 17" flatscreen in the box that i gutted out of an older monitor. I have decided that I must have at least a MPG and the resolution/axis switches mounted at the control. Not sure if I will need to run 2 BOBs, modbus, or some other i/o board to accomodate all the options but ill cross that bridge when i get to it. My thought is to use the Campbell board as my main BOB. I dont think im going to use a motion control because ive heard you can loose accuracy in contour machining. The machine will be powered by 3 Viper 200s after learning that the support differential encoders (encoder products model 755 on all axis).

Anyway, the machine is in my place, all cleaned up, a little taken apart, and ready to come to life. For the better part of a year iv been researching and gathering info on this project and I almost feel comfortable to take this on. My biggest drawback though, is my lack of electronics knowledge. Iv been reading many books and talking to many smart folks and have learned alot, or at least enough to hold my own in conversation, alas i am no electronics expert. All that aside, I have all the confidence in the world that if I play smart and take my time this machine will be making chips before I know it.

    PICS COMING SOON!!!

    -Jake
