Thumbs up Rebuilding my cnc turret lathe

    hello friends,
I have run my cnc lathe for couple of months now. It is working quite good. The tolerances are better than expected. however i am not satisfied with the surface finish still. (i am a bit greedy in case of quality) Right now my machine is having a huge footprint. Pic no 1. (it may look like junk but it was a dream a couple of years before)

because nothing was planned before and everything was done step by step i had no idea how the things will look when finished (it often happens with newbies with their first build). My current lathe is a normal horizontal lathe so chip and coolant flow is pissing me the most. It has no enclosure so coolant and chips fly around me often. Now the new game starts.

I am planning to build a new lathe using the hardware and ball screws from this lathe that will look like the one in picture no. 2. (i hope monkey king don't mind that i am going to copy his design).

Two things i want in the new lathe is less foot print and better coolant flow. i was considering the slant bed design before but i think it will take more space than the vertical one. The new lathe bed will be around 150kg and total lathe will weight around 300kg.

Things i would like to know from the experts:
1...Is it a good idea to mount the x horizontally? i believe it will put more load on x and i will have to sacrifice the rapids (i am using steppers) or i can use counterbalance?
2...if i mount the lathe bed on pipe stand like in the picture, will it vibrate or wobble at a height of 3 feet(max rpms will be 1500).
3... position of the turret upside or downside?

I am considering the foot print of the machine to be around 2x4 feet and height 6 feet? seems scary to me.i am also planning to use granite on its base to increase the weight and make more stable base.

    comments are welcome.
please see pictures for better details about what i have and what i want.
Also help me getting rid of that compressor by designing a better turret without pneumatic locking system.

    cnc lathe rebuild

one more reason because of what i want to rebuild is its headstock length that is very less. The chuck is at almost the same distance between bearings. I have doubt on the headstock's bearing bores also (i got the lathe and headstock from junkyard) this time everything will be done in my shop. The turret will have better tool holders and carbide insert tooling this time.

    thanks,

If going vertical with the X, with the table and tool turret weight I could see you needing counter balance of some kind, also you may need a brake when off or E-stop, as the weight can back feed the ball screw to the bottom of travel.
Or is there one already on the X motor? as it looks more like a servo than a stepper?

    dear al,
it isn't my lathe in the pics. A guy from japan build this lathe. Here is his build log:

i am just considering his design. It is simple and time saving. As for the brake, i think adding a stopper just near the home will work. It could be few mm after the home switch as i consider home switches with 9-10 mm of travel.

i don't like gang tooling too much. You cannot make deep grooves and big cuts because everything is on a boring bar. for smaller work (like 0.625 inch) it may be good but i have bigger plans.
