Managed to get access to a bridgeport type machine to do work on the Z Axis. Almost done, need to do a fair bit of tapping and will then assemble.

Ok, cleaned up a bit, removed the reference table, mounted the main table and did a quick test fit of the Z Axis bottom part.

    The naked machine

    Some bits on it

Z axis, ballscrew is just 'hanging' onto the overhang, not mounted. The Z axis needs some of the holes to be drilled all the way through and I need to find the location of the bottom carts. I did not have the measurement at hand when I machined the holes on the larger mill. As these are not threaded, I have a bit of margin for error.

Ive not been good at keeping this thread up to date. The UK Mycnc thread has been kept up to date.

Thor works, busy tweaking etc but some info here:-

    "Suppose this means it works.

    Speeds and Feeds

    24000 rpm - 6mm endmill
    Cutting Rate 4000mm/min
    Lead / Ramp at 1440 mm/min

This was run at 80% speed. Overall happy with the cut considering there is no finish pass.

DOC is 5mm, WOC is 1.2mm

Still got more to do, but happy with the initial results.

    "

Yep. Feel free to send me £3000 for something better.

Ill upgrade the spindle once a)this one dies, b)cannot do what is needed, c)I have the funds available.

A design constraint that you may not be aware of, is that this mill can only be powered by single phase, 32A max. This is the most powerful ****ty spindle (4KW) that fits that requirement.

Of course Id prefer a fully balanced ATC spindle.

Install some kind of BT 30 spindle with timing pulley and servo motor to rotate it. Much, much better choise for reasonable money.

I did look at this. I couldnt find anything I was willing to part money for. The cheapest I could find was around $1500 upwards to around $4K. Servo power, I am limited to around 1.5KW (using Panasonic), however I could look at other makes.

Ill just make the best use of this spindle until I can afford an upgrade to an all in one unit.

Thanks. For me, it looks like a viable option. I'm not a mechanical engineer however I'm aware that some very large machines are built using similar technologies. Lafarge and other make their own proprietary UHPC - worth a look.

    Thanks.

Are you able to compare concrete+plasticizer with epoxy granite? On strength, vibration etc. Actually what I want to understand is how much the plasticiser makes the concrete softer and as a result how much the concrete gets flex.

You milled a decorative 1/2 moon into your vise?

That was courtesy of my previous machine (Denford Triac).

Looking forward to getting the HSD 6.8KW 24K RPM spindle working 100%, hopefully this weekend I can do some test cuts. Ive only got a few toolholders / collets but will sort that out once I am confident that this works OK.

Hi Chaza - How is your mill going? Any long term observations? I'm looking at doing a benchtop concrete mill. Did you use Portland cement? I'm going to use CSA cement. Regards Peter
