You may want to make sure indexing service is off.
You also should probably re post this problem in the mach section rather than vendors. You'll probably get more hits.

I'm think it is. I disabled it in the 'Features list' that Windows shows me, but Windows in general is a black box full of magic smoke to me. It's entirely possible it's not properly disabled...

I think I will - it's gone a little far afield from the original vendor-related question...

Hope you find the cause of your problem. I recently saw a similar issue to yours with the machine making a clunking noise as you described. The solution was as Ger21 suggested.
I'll give it a go (I meant to, yesterday, but I got carried away when I noticed the disk issue ), but the correlation with the disk is just too suspicious not to be my prime suspect

I do appreciate all the help though. Thanks one and all

And one final post - I found the solution in a thread on the Mach forum.

Thanks one and all for the helpful suggestions.

I'm sorry I'm slow 'sometimes'.. but what exactly did you do to fix the problem? BIOS settings to what? Plus "sh. half step mode"? Asking because I could try similar settings to see if it would fix some of my problems..

And.. I don't have Geckos. The stepper drives I have do not have "electronic resonance dampening".

Anyway, I have servos & drives for 4 axis' that I'm upgrading, but still interested for a fix.

It was (I think) a combination of what Gerry suggested in post #5 on this thread, and the enabling of the Sherline half-pulse mode (Config -> Ports and pins -> Port setup and axis selection -> Sherline 1/2-pulse mode checked, restart, test).

The BIOS mods were options on the 'Advanced CMOS settings' page in my BIOS. I'd never heard of them before Gerry mentioned them...

I'm also running with the kernel at a higher frequency (100kHz) - I found that to be useful, it seemed to make the "clunks" less clunky... That's not very descriptive... Smaller clunks and less of a physical vibration when holding the motor in your hand.

I don't know if it's any one of these, but all together they seemed to work for me. Now that it's working, I'm not keen on disabling them, in case I have difficulty getting it back [grin]

    Hope that helps,

    Simon

    Clunk's in your stepper's

I'm saying this from a month of hair pulling and yelling at the computer!
Turn OFF everything running in the background on your pc I was getting the
same issue's thought I fixed it one night, went back out the next morning
same problem. I bought the pc from a local "place" with WIN 7. Thought that was the problem too. Had them take off 7 and put XP on it . Did it fix it? NOPE
All the crap running under cover was it. I told them to put the bare bones on it . Run's like a dream now, that was 2yrs ago. A buddy had the same problem with his plasma turning off and on during a cut. Did the same thing to fix it. Hope this help's.
