need a few pointers on 3d

i have a shopsabre 7214 and i have been cutting mdf and plywood with it for the last 4 years. i want to learn how to cut 3d. i went to vector3dart.com and i have looked at all there products. they are really nice. if any of you guys could tell me which bits i would need to start off doing 3d , that would be great. is there a free sample out there somewhere as well.
i want to cut out the larger wildlife scenes onto different woods.

Get some large ones for roughing-out (as big as your spindle will accommodate) and small ones for finishing (small enough to get into the smallest detail you want to carve.) I like the tapered ball endmills that Precisebits makes; they're strong enough not to break and have a long cutting length, but give you the effect of a 1/16" diameter tool for detail:

I use these, they work great for 3D and hold up very well.

Hi Mat,

Have you talked to the guys at Shop Sabre? I'll bet they could help you out. I think they are pretty experienced in carving 3d.

If you are cutting large objects, you'll need large to small end mills for roughing out. You'll need ball nose bits for detailed work. We do mid-size to small stuff and we use 1/2" to 1/8" tools, both in end mills and ball nose. I also like to keep a few v-groove tools - 90 deg, 60 deg - in 1/2" as shank as well as some smaller ones for detailed work in 2 1/2 d.
