Help using the "Guides"

Hi there,

Hopefully I'm just missing the obvious but when I try to use the guides, I can't get them to snap to existing geometry. I've tried checking and un-checking all the options in the "Snaps" dialogue but doesn't make any difference. Help.... Please lol.
