Send drawings for quote to
lewenz@sbcglobal.net
Thanks
Not really sure how this works getting a quote... but my machinist has retired and I need some parts made. I have what are basically blue prints and samples of what I need made. I do not have any CNC specific files.
A picture of what I need is attached. A "set" would be two of the long pieces and 4 of the corner pieces. We usually do about 20 sets at a time, maybe twice a year.
The long pieces are made from 7/8" or 1" round stock about 4" long OAL and taken down to fit inside some 7/8" OD x .035 4130 tubing. All the parts are drilled all the way through at about 3/8" and slightly chamfered. The corners are usually made from a 2" x 2" x 1" slug of 6061. Then cut to a right angle and then machined to finished size.
I hope this makes some sense. I'm out of the office right now so I don't have access to the plans or any more pics. Let me know if you are interested or need any more information. Thanks!!

I will cross check those who have posted with what I have sent to make sure you all got a set of the drawings. I will send them out on Monday if you got skipped over.
As of now, I would guess I have enough quotes coming in... so hold off unless you are sure you are a world beater, but hurry please. I would like to get this quote portion of the task settled in the next week or so.
Thanks again for all the quotes, you guys are great!

Thanks!!
We received about 18 quotes from this board and have now chosen two shops to make the parts. If they want to come forward they are welcome to.
Perhaps of interest is just how wide ranging the quotes were... some of the quotes were up to 4 times more than the lower quotes. I don't know what that means, but if the parts we have on order come in and are good, some of ya'll might need to adjust your quoting methods. That is a really wide margin for something like this.
Anyway, thanks again to the board and all the shops that quoted. I appreciate your time.
cheers,
Russ

This is very common. Always in a large group of bidders some % of people will drastically underestimate what is required, some % of people will drastically overestimate what is required, and a bunch of folks will be in the middle. This gets worse when the spec doesn't have a lot of detail WRT finish, tolerances, etc.
Regards.
Mike
Also some people won't have the optimum machine, fixturing and tooling to do the job and not realize it because they aren't up on the latest and greatest or have not had a lot of exposure. It will take them 10 minutes to do a part the guy with the right set-up will do in 3 minutes. I can remember winning a quote years ago and the RFQ posted the price I charged and everyone was saying I was working for beer money living in my mom's basement because of the price. The part just hit my sweet spot and I made $75 an hour on the job and was low bidder. It was a 45 second part for me and 3 minutes for everyone else.
UPDATE: Parts are in from both shops... faster than estimated time and they are all exactly what we wanted. Great job you guys! Thank you very much!
