Hello all!
I have been reading this forum for years and there is so much interesting material. Then I registered and now I even have something to ask. I have a small wood or soft material special lathe and it has Sherline motor and headstock installed. Now I thinking to upgrade it because indexing option would be nice for shaping round material other way but I still need spindle mode also. It is not powerful, but working just fine for my applications. It has a belt transmission and chuck max speed is 2800 RPM which is just perfect (or even a little high). These are the motor specifications.

Duty rating: Continuous–10 oz. in. at 6100 rpm, .85 amperes; Intermittent–30 oz. in. at 5500 rpm, 1.75 amperes (5 minutes on / 15 minutes off)
Output horsepower: .06 KW (60 W) at 10 oz. in. / 6100 rpm
AC voltage (input): Normally 115 VAC, 60 Hz, Single Phase to rectifier (Sherline electronic speed control converts any input from 100 VAC to 240 VAC, 50-60 Hz.)
DC voltage: 90 VDC to motor (60 Hz)
Speed in rpm: 6100 rpm continuous

One option could be AC servo but it is quite expensive solution. Has anyone tested closed loop hybrid stepper as spindle mode?
Any suggestions/ideas please?
