Default Yet another 4th axis build.

I have just (nearly) completed a 4th axis for my Harrison milling machine. It is based around one of the Harmonic Drive FHA actuators.
This is quite a lazy way to do it, they are pretty much a complete axis out of the box.

Rather than describe it all in detail here, here is a link to a blog post on the subject.

I wish I had one of those nice machined castings to use for my 4th axis project.

I will be using an Alpha Wittenstein TP 110 planetary that has less than 1 arc minute of backlash. It's a monster of a gear, similar to the one you're using, so same concept.

No doubt what I come up with will not be as nice as what you have done. What you have done is fantastic! It would be nice to see some videos of that thing in action!

    Thanks for sharing!

Also, what are you going to do for a matching tailstock? I was thinking of using a chuck at both ends for what I'm doing. I don't want to try and figure out how to drill a perfectly aligned hole at the back of my work piece every time I make something for a live center. Or are you only planning on using this for short lengths without a tailstock?

My previous dividing head came with an adjustable tailstock, and this head has been sized to be just below the maximum height that that can adjust to.

Adjustable-height tailstocks are readily available on eBay.

Are you going to use your lathe to drill holes for your tailstock to rest in?

    Late reply...

I do have a spare casting, but posting to Canada would be expensive.
