    Post a photo, it depends on the chuck type and manufacturer, it could be just for the Collet closer for the large 5C collets 2" or larger there is a ring with a taper that screws on to the nose and the large collets are closed by this

    Here's a pic. Believe it or not there isn't one single mark on it at all, so I have not idea who the manuf is. Also what are the two threaded holes on the sides for? They go all the way through.

    Side holes are for oiling. You can thread short screws there to prevent from dust.
    Thread on the back of the collet is for older type of chuck.

    @steryd what do you mean by "Thread on the back of the collet is for older type of chuck." I was asking what the thread on the nose of the collet chuck is for.

    They have a cap that screws on to protect it, there will be a 2-3/16 x 10 TPI if it is standard, some manufactures are still making these 5C type chucks with a threaded nose Bison below is a good example

    the screw hole in the side of your one is most likely for the Key to stop the collet turning
