    Default SkyFire SVM-0 Mill

As promised I'm starting a new thread for the soon-to-be-in-my-possession SkyFire SVM-0. For those who have followed the thread in the subforum here, you know that it has been a long haul to get to this point. But I hope this mill will open new opportunities for me - capabilities that are out of the realm of my benchtop CNC router...

Anyways, as promised I want to discuss a few points about the import process. It's more involved than getting a package though EMS. This is to the US; may be different in other countries.

What you should get from your vendor -
    • An itemized invoice
    • A Bill of Lading
    • Packing list

Hopefully your vendor (Defeng here) will provide you with some info to get the ball rolling, like the container number, estimated vessel departure/arrival dates, vessel name, voyage number, master bill of lading number, AMS house bill of lading number.... Also the info of the consolidator and container stuffing warehouse. And the HBL/SCAC code.

All containers arriving by ship are subject to inspection by Customs and Border Patrol. and you'll have to fill out ISF 10+2 form (Importer Security Filing) PRIOR to the merchandise boarding the ship!!!! My eyes glazed over looking at the form, so I seeked the assistance of a customs broker. Thankfully, they are able to fill this out using the information in the previous paragraph.

For the customs broker, you'll have to sign a power of attorney form that allows them to file on your behalf. There is another form aside from the 10+2 that is filed that has more information from you (like SS# and other personal information). They'll also want the documents I listed above, as well as a copy of your photo ID. The fee is actually pretty reasonable, but this is the start only. Then the wating game begins.

When the package is close to port, you should receive an arrival notice. This is then sent to your customs broker. The nice thing here is your customs broker will do all the arrangements with the ocean company, from paying the ocean freight and customs fee, as well as truck and warehouse your shipment. This all comes at a fee, of course, along with the bond premium, estimated duty, ISF fee, ISF single transaction bond, and other fees. You pay the ISF fee and single transaction bond first, before your package leaves port. All the other goodies are paid at pick-up (or delivery).

Well, this is pretty much it. It's actually less daunting, since your customs broker handles everything and you just send a photo ID, the shipping info supplied by your vendor, and the "cabbage."

For those who asked, my customs broker was WB Skinner, in Lodi, NJ. Michael Skinner was extremely helpful with the whole process.

To preview the specs of my machine:

    Bare-bones SkyFire SVM-0 CNC
    Extended table
    12" x 5.5" x 8" travel envelope (I believe, approximately)
    2.2kW water-cooled spindle, 24krpm max
HiWin H-class (high precision) linear rails through out (upgrade)
C3 class ballscrews, 4mm lead (custom) (I originally stated these as C5 class)

I went with precision ground ball screws because my future goal is to fit servos. I chose 4mm lead because this is a smaller machine, and I thought having higher mechanical resolution would be beneficial for the work I plan to do. The C3 grade is pretty standard issue on higher end VMCs, These are single nut, but I don't think that will be a problem as they are preloaded. Note that even on a standard C3 nut the axial clearance is less than .005mm. To leverage this precision I upgraded the standard linear rails as well.

For now, I will be using Parker E-AC stepper drives, along with Parker HV-233 stepper motors. Pulse generation will be provided by EdingCNC CPU5A, an excellent USB solution which includes a very user friendly GUI (Contact Bert Eding at EdingCNC, he's a really helpful guy and gets back fast with support despite being across the pond!)

My computer will consist of a mini-ITX board with SSD for faster performance and no moving parts. I also have an industrial touch screen display and a stainless steel keyboard with trackball salvaged from a kiosk for my controller box.

I already have a pretty good assortment of tooling, mainly from Onsrud, SGS, Widia, Exactaform.... so I'm pretty good there. Most of my work is in cast aluminum, and I leverage the high speed spindle with high-speed constant-engagement toolpaths. I plan to demonstrate this once I'm up and running.

Future plans include a semi-enclosure, though that will happen once I find a more permanent residence for the machine.

Definitely looking forward to your build. I think you'll be very pleased with the EdingCNC package.
From your description of the hardware you'll be installing, it should perform well.

Thanks! I've used the CNC5A for about two-three years now, and it is by far the best hardware/software combo I've used for the money. really, once your purchase a Mach3 license and an ESS, the CPU5A is actually cheaper since the software is free.

The linear rails and ball screws were actually ordered and installed by Defeng. Both are options, but the 4mm pitch C3 ballscrews were custom. Having .0002" accuracy and .00007" repeatability is always a nice thing!

Well, the mill is riding around shotgun in my car. I had to remove the back electronics cover to do so. I decided not to unbolt the column as everything had been calibrated.

Mike Skinner was pretty cool, allowed me to uncrate and disassemble at the warehouse. I was very happy at what I saw upon removing the top panel. This thing is a lot more massive than the pictures first suggest. That's a good thing. Nothing was damaged and everything was in order.

Included with the shipment at some extras I ordered... 3 sets of 15 series linear rails for another project, four ER collets 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 which are the common shanks I use. I also ordered extra collet nuts. Three bellows type couplers. Defeng threw me in some proximity sensors as well. The front and back panel I will also incorporate with my electronics. Also looks like a remote pendant for the VFD. Will have to find a good place for that. Again, all parts packaged neatly.

I have a cabinet to set this on, will need to make a chip tray and set up my coolant mister as well.

The crate was in good shape.... A minor ding in one corner but otherwise survived well.

Here's the mill, wrapped up, with the sides of the crate removed.

I had to remove the back cover to get it in the car.

Jips, the linear rails are for a desktop engraver/3D printer I'm working on....

I have to say I was amazed how well this was packed and crated. Down to the nylon washers on the bolts holding the machine down to protect the paint. I've seen and read some horror stories from other more well-known vendors and their machines with filings and swarf everywhere, rough-fitted or machined parts, rust, chipped and cracked paint. As clean as the pics were in the pre-shipped state, is exactly how I received everything. The sheet metal work is excellent as well and fits like a glove. Everything installed makes sense with no superfluous parts, edges.... every part does what it needs to do yet still looks clean. The castings are pretty beefy - I looked at a similar sized mill at the local Harbor Freight and this one is easily heavier, with the column having about twice the depth of the Harbor Freight mill. The stainless steel covers are nice thick gage, and the Gore-Tex like material for the way covers look heavy-duty. Even my extra parts were packed with care and neatly.

I quickly unpackaged the lm rails and blocks I ordered and they look pretty good especially considering the price. I didn't get a high-end solution because after all this will be for a 3D printer. Nonetheless, very good quality.

LOL... Still have to pop my steppers and drives on this mini beast! I have it at work now where it will stay for the near future. I do have a GoPro!

I did test everything beforehand so once everything's together I should be good to go. I just have to figure out mounting the proximity sensors, but that won't stop me from making chops.

The ISF filing fee and single transaction bond was $125 paid before shipping. The final bill included

    Bond premium
    Estimated duty
    Customs entry service
    Exam
    Ocean freight
    Transfer of documents
    Trucking
    Warehousing

Of these the ocean freight was the most at $462. I paid a total of $1100 or so.
