Default How to Determine Lathe Size

If a lathe is a 9 X 24, how is that measured. I know the 24 is distance between centers and the 9 is swing. How is the 9 measured???? How about lathe spndle height from the bed? Is that also measured and reported? Wow, so early and so many questions. Old minds want to know!!! Thanks for the help.

The swing is the dimension diameter of the largest part you can turn in the chuck either over the bed, over the carriage and through the bed-gap, if you have one.
The different dimensions are in Dia. in US/Can and in Rad. in UK and other parts.
