Eric,
I have never seen a dual purpose machine that was worth it's weight in chips (of whatever)...
I personally would hold out for a good buy on a real mill or a real lathe.
Do you only work in wood?

I am going to look at one tomorrow. He has it for sale, but he took the milling head off and made a stand alone milling machine. So it's the lathe portion only. 2.5 years old. He want's $800.00 CAD for it. It's made in china, presumably similar to minilathe quality. Posibly made in the same factory??

Hi Eric,
I have been wanting a lathe for some time, and while I'm not experienced with them myself, I have spoken to several people who are. The advice I have been given is to be leary of Chinese made machines, there are some good ones, but a lot of lower quality machines come out of China. For a given price you can get a machine that does lots of things, or a machine that does one thing well (the Jack of all trades and master of none syndrome), so I would avoid a combo machine particularly one that has been stripped of its combo functionality. Lastly, "they don't make them like they used to," so old doesn't mean lower quality. The technology in manual machines hasn't changed much, so I would take a closer look at the 40 year old lathe.
Good luck, and have a Happy New Year,
Steve
Eric,
Also keep in mind that if you buy a Chinese machine you might have to wait months or won't even get replacement spares if it breaks down.
I bought a new Taiwanese Mill (Argo) six years ago. Thus far it gave me excellent service. I had only two small breakdowns that i could fix myself.....
You know the saying "Caveat Emptor"!

I'm lazy, I'm only "sparking" when the EDM is running....
Klox, could you elaborate on that saying "Cavet Emptor"? I think it could apply to me. Thanks.

Have you looked at this machine? I wouldn't consider it in any way unless you actually touched it and checked it's adjustability, condition, drive system, etc. Do you want to stress it to it's max? the bed looks a little weak.
