Default Nesting and water jet costs

1st post. I want to get understand what makes up the costs before I contact some WJ cutters for quotes for probably a hundred or so parts with variously complex shapes. Obviously the size of the material (i.e 4 mm aluminium sheets) but cutting pathways? I have had several attempts at nesting including using a few free nesting programs. Comparing my efforts with the nesting programs, my manual attempts are tighter but the later are noticeably better aligned. I did not focus on alignments or possible pathways, but can on the next attempt.

Before I do this, I'd like to know what the preferred spacing between parts should be. I have some parts down to a 3mm space between them. Too close? What's the minimum recommended spacing?

Bump. Is there a preferred spacing between parts for waterjet cutting?
