Ball screw mapping is where you calibrate the screw in sections and then the motion controller applies correction depending on what part of the screw you are at. That way it can take into account any inconsistencies in the lead screw.
My plasma table is chain drive. Mapping would be great for chain. For example when I bought 2 brand new quality drive chains of the same brand I laid them out side by side on a flat surface to check for any difference in length over about 3m.
Indeed there was a slight difference. Bring into the equation wear (stretch as it's often called) in certain areas of the chain and mapping would be a great calibration feature. I know high end controllers may have this.
LinuxCNC has screw mapping.
Mach3 has also Screw mapping.
I would like very much to see this option available in UCCNC , it is very important in machines of 2000 to 3000 mm screw lengths (large routers) !
If you need precision cutting you need to have a screw mapp.
The other interesting part would be an input for digital linear scales. (encoder feedback) like Linux-CNC has !
For the UCCNC developers, is this something on the "list"?
You'd have to ask on their forum, but I doubt it. There are a lot of much more important things on that list.
How would you plan on measuring the error along your screw?
