The air runs the tool holder. Since I have removed the original controls from my 325 I can't really do more than guess at what's causing the fault but I'd take a look at the pressure sensor that is at the back of the machine. You could probably bypass the switch to see if that fixes the fault.
Does the tool holder release properly? I know when my pressure is low I have trouble releasing the tools.

Air line on a J325 is for tool unclamp only. Goes to the drawbar assembly. (well, solenoid first). Originally it got a zero speed signal from the spindle amp then would allow you unclamp the tool.

Dynapath is such a fun control. We used to have classroom manuals available through Ellison, but that was a long time ago. It's really easy to use, I can still run those very well, but I used to teach the Dynapath calss. Kinda need to be in front of it to show you though. You must zero return it first, and the J325 didn't have limit switches for that. You lined the arrows up to about 1/4 inch or so then hit zero, and it would move and line the arrows up. The quill just leave about 1/4 or so hanging out and zero return. Everything is done through mode select.
