    Journeyman 310 Communications

I have a Journeyman 310 with a Delta 10 controller that I am trying to communicate with using an RS-232 cable. This at a commuity college and the mill was recently taken out of storage after a facility remodel. We used to communicate using the Delta 10 offline programmer (version 2.03 from 1987) on a DOS-based computer (the system I inherited from my predecessor). Now I am trying to set up a computer running XP to talk to the mill via parallel port with no success. HELP!!!

You will not be able to communicate with the Delta 10 through a parallel port, since the control didn't have one. If your PC (either laptop or desktop) doesn't have a RS-232 port, you will have to purchase a USB to serial adapter.
The emulator software you reference on the PC is no longer supported, but for simply transferring part program files to and from the Delta 10, almost any communication software will do. The part programs are text only - there is no special formatting. I've used HyperTerminal, a communication program that is included with Windows. There are two "tricks" to using HyperTerminal: when the program asks for which modem you are using, tell it you are going "Direct to COM port," and when you go to actually transfer the file, use "Capture text file..." or "Send text file..."

What should the communication settings be at (parity, etc) be set for at each end (Hyperterminal and at the dynapath)?

there was a good thread how to on setting up communications over at cnczone. here's the link:

    http://www.cnczone.com/vb...d.php?t=136107

the best thing to do as far as the cable is concerned is start with a null modem cable and then cut it as necessary. unfortunately, there are about six "standards" for cables sold as null modem so the probability of needing to modify it is high.

you may want to use one of the file transfer programs since it will be easier initially than hyperterminal. i like this one:

    http://www.easydnc.com/

    my settings were as follows:

    4800 E 7 1
    Xon/Xoff= on

    ASCII start code = 11
    ASCII end code = 13

my machine is down at the moment and i'm going off of notes, so hopefully this works!

I still have the RS-232 cable we previously used with the DOS system (25 pin connectors on both ends). Do you think the cable would be functional if I were to use a 25 pin to 9 pin adapter?

    rs232

Tree IS BACKWARD. Its a parrallel port not serial.

    2 - 2
    3 -3
    7-7
    4-5 jumpered both ends
    6-8-20 jumpered both ends

talk to the mill via parallel port
Why are you using a parallel port ?

Is it because your computer doesn't have an RS232 port ? or because your CNC only has parallel ?

If it's because your PC doesn'tnhave RS232 9many don't nowadays) then just get a low cost USB/RS232 adapter such as 'prolofic' (google for that name) they work fine with most file transfer software to CNC.
