Tree Journeyman - Model Identification and Questions

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I was lucky enough to come across a free Tree Journeyman mill with a Dynapath Delta 10 last week. It came from one of the small tool rooms at Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine (where I work). They surplused it. What type of Tree Journeyman mill is this? I've looked on Google Images and can't find a Tree Journeyman mill that matches this one.



You may notice a great deal of features missing from the head. The spindle motor went out when RR owned it. Machine Repair decided to convert it to direct drive. They bought a 7.5HP Baldor 4000RPM motor with an encoder on the back shaft. I guess the motor went out again, so they bought a brand new Baldor motor right before the machine was surplused. They bought a Baldor Flux Vector VFD. I don't know the history of the VFD, but it looks a lot newer. This wasn't a stock item with the mill was it?



Can anyone confirm whether Tree Journeymans and the Dynapath Delta 10 system came with Baldor servos? I have three identical Baldor servos for the X, Y and Z axis. I can't find anyone else with Dynapath Delta 10 systems that had Baldor servos. Notice a Baldor theme here? The union guys are big on Baldor components.

Below is an overhead view of the top of the mill. What is the middle feature? I know the left is for the spindle and the right is for the servo for the Z axis ball screw.



Lastly, what is the purpose of the large hole in the casting to the right of the spindle? There is nothing when I look inside of the hole.



Can anyone explain what Machine Repair removed from the top of the mill? It looks like a significant amount of stock components were removed to make this thing direct drive.

Probably a 200 series. Looks likemthe vari drive was removed. I worked for the tree distributor and never saw one like that. All the tree cnc machines I've ever seen were beige from the 80s or the newer red and gray ones. I doubt that control was original. I,d bet it had an old systems 10 or something else.

This machine is beige under the blue paint, though a lot of machines were painted beige/tan in the mid 90s when it was still Allison Gas Turbine.

Does anyone know where I can find the serial number on the machine?

Also, does anyone have any idea what series 200 model this might be? I don't really know how many different 200 series they made. I've done a Google image search for both the 200 and 250 series and neither look similar to my machine.

After looking at it closer, it sure doesn't look like any Tree i've ever seen. That Delta control is one of the newer (post 91) series, and there is no way thats a 90's Tree.

I would be surprised if it wasn't a Tree mill. The electrical prints from equipment engineering are titled "Tree Mill". Also, the aluminum X- ball screw protector is the exact same as the Tree mills. I do agree that I haven't seen any like this one, but then again I haven't sen many Journeymans.

Do you know where the serial number is hidden?

Most tree ser#'s were on the back column of the machine.

It appears as though I have identified my mill. I received a large cabinet full of tooling for the mill. A large label in the top cabinet said Tree J300. I looked online and about the only thing that would come up on Google was a post by dkmc back in 2007 (Tree J300 retrofit progress - Practical Machinist - Largest Manufacturing Technology Forum on the Web). I wish I could find more info on the J300.
