CMTS Toronto

Sorry for so few pictures, but these DiLithum or whatever batteries suck.I could not use the flash as the batteries were near dead.I did some display work for Toshiba and have few photos of the event.Time for a new camera.Never the less it was a good show.

I am just a wood hacker and do not know much of milling or metal machines. Here is a picture before the batteries died.I do not know what the machine is,but it was cutting under water.Lazer or plasma?Very cool!

photoshop

I photoshoped the images.ESAB is a Canadian company in Mississauga.very impressive web site.ESAB.ca.
Thinking back, there was at least 1"of water over the steel plate and the cutter submerged. No smoke,no noise,no blinding arc.The letters were very smooth.Looking at the hoses I assume it is some kind of gas cutting.

That is a plasma cutter with oxy-acetylene torches for heavier cutting. A plasma with shield gas (preferably oxygen) operates VERY well underwater, as the shield gas serves two functions - to open a purge space for the plasma jet, and doesn't harden the cut edge (edge hardening is basically air nitriding of the material, due to nitrogen comprising 78% of air). Cutting below the surface of the water cuts dross to nothing (which is already low if using the right amperage, feedrates and consumables...if dross is high, your system is not operating in the appropriate range) and eliminates all of the airborne smoke and particles from the rapid iodization caused by a 30,000* plasma jet.

the shapes coming off that machine had a pretty wide heat affected zone, maybe 1/8", they sent them down the hall to be deburred at another booth, then ground on the mini blanchard. after grinding they had a nice mirror shine all over.

Mini blanchard? Do you have pics of this machine, or the name of the company that had it? This could be a nice addition to my shop.
