Update: New Makino 2009 Online Seminars

We've added a few new webinars to our schedule this quarter. The newly added webinars are listed below. And remember, Makino's online seminars are free with registration. A full list of our online seminars can be found at www.makino.com/events. Hope to see you all there!

Newly added seminars:
Feb. 12 - Cutting Large Parts with Large Tools - In this webinar, Apex Precision will discuss how it uses horizontal machining centers to produce kanban quantities of large cast iron production parts utilizing custom fixtures and combination tooling. Register

Mar. 12 - High Speed Machining of Aluminum Valve Bodies - Makino will demonstrate machining of transmission valve bodies with high performance PCD tooling. Aluminum with high silicon content is difficult to machine with carbide tooling. Using high performance tooling, Makino will demonstrate significantly improved face milling with reduced burring, superior spool bore accuracies, repeatability and surface finishes. In addition, improved cycle times and tool life are also achieved, lowering the cost per part. Register

May 7 - Manufacturing Solutions and Technology for Mexico - Makino will provide an overview of the comprehensive manufacturing solutions available in Mexico. Relevant technologies, robust process solutions will be highlighted, local applications support, training and customer technical support will be reviewed in both Spanish and English. If you are considering manufacturing in Mexico, learn how Makino can provide lower costs per part and superior local support. Register

May 14 - Benefits of Tool Balancing in Production Applications - There are many factors to consider when weighing the benefits of properly balanced tools. Find out why tool balance can have a dramatic impact on your process. Register

June 4 - Lower Your Costs By Going Horizontal - Planning to increase manufacturing capacity by adding another low cost VMC? Maybe it is time to evaluate how to achieve lower costs, increased profits, lean operation and reduced lead-times by switching to a horizontal machining center.

This webinar will compare the use - and associated costs - of utilizing an HMC for the production of a part rather than the traditional VMC approach. The evaluation will consider factors such as machine price, load/unload times, access to the part, chip management, multi-part fixturing, done-in-one part sequencing, part handling labor content, possible errors or scrap, floor-to-floor times, through-put and ultimately - cost per part. Register

All Makino webinars are archived for later viewing at www.makino.com/library. There are over 80 webinars available on topics such as micromachining, moldmaking, EDM, aerospace, automation, production machining and new webinars are added the week after they are broadcast. Tran*script*s are also available.

First off a big welcome to Makino!
I always enjoy the webinars although I hate that name. Lots of good info.
Spent some quality time at the IMTS booth..especially the Horizontals
I wish you had a different dealer for my part of the world.

Thanks for the welcoming comment! It's great to be a part of cnczone and this group of fellow machining enthusiasts. We hope to positively contribute as much as possible to the conversation here.

Might not be the best section for this but what the hey. I have a project coming up that is a little off my normal path. It is a part that starts out 8x2x2, in 6061. Easy pie...but I anticipate it moving to the same size block of carbon fiber almost immediately....not so easy pie...

Does Makino make any special modifications to their machines for machining CF? I have done a limited amount of trimming and drilling in CF, and it is nasty. This will be full blown machining, and a lot of it.
My first thought is a Fanuc Robodrill with the 24K and cut the part on a 4th.

Unfortunately Makino does not currently produce machines or modifications specifically designed for carbon fiber machining.

There was however an interesting series of articles in Modern Machine Shop late last year that covered carbon fiber. They are linked below. Hopefully some of the content may relate to your process or even inspire some new approaches.
