LA Westec 2009

Is there enough to see or do for a one man shop? What does it cost to attend the show?

There's always plenty to see, even during slow years when there are fewer exhibitors in attendance.

If you work in the industry you should get free tickets in the mail from any number of vendors, suppliers, machine tool makers, etc...

I'm Going

Its a 1200 mile drive one way for me. But over the years I have made it count. In the early 90's I toured both Haas and FADAL.

On one trip I visted an optics importer which ended up saving my company $11,000 on some aditional lenses for a laser system I was using.

Shoot, I may even hit Disneyland this trip, its been about 30 yrs...

Attendance is free when pre-registered through the SME website.

I think it's worthwhile just to see different ideas in action.

Cathedral City? As in 'California?' You haven't been to Westec? Holy cow, man, register and get thy butt down there.

I've been doing the 'one day' thing since 2002. Doing it all in one day always seemed like a rush.

I went for two days last year. The extra day made me feel a lot more relaxed. I went to all of the free seminars on the first day and filled in the gaps with what I could cover on the bottom floor (Kentia Hall).

I walked the main floor the second day. I learned a ton of information about EDM technology, got some missed basics on HSM techniques and found tooling I'd have never known existed. It was so valuable to me that I might even go three days this year.

I registered within 3 hours of getting the notification (October 17th). If you're within driving distance, there is no reason not to attend--and it's free.

I think you can still preregister online. Yes, you can register onsite but it goes far, far faster if you do it ahead of time.

You'll print out a barcode sheet from your computer. Take it with you to registration. You walk up, scan the bar code, verify your ID on the computer screen and it prints out your badge on the spot. I had nobody in front of me last year when I checked in at 9:00 AM. The lines for 'onsite' registration were pretty long.

I'm going to be wandering the place all day Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday is 50/50 depending on how much ground I cover.

Thumbs up

$50 a head at the door.

They don't like gate crashers.

BTW - Since I'm out of the country at the moment, I'll be coming much farther...

Exclamation I'll be there...

Monday and Tuesday.
I was thinking it might be interesting to tape a small square of paper in the normal badge with our "Logged in names" on it.
Just a thought.
Steve "AKA scadvice"

Also: I'm thinking this may be the last good year to go since I understand there is a new and supposedly bigger show being setup in Las Vegas soon. I also just talked to a Mazak distributor (Selway) and he said they had pulled out of westec.
