Tormach CNC Lathe - Getting Closer

Looks like Tormach is getting a bit closer to a production CNC lathe:

Thanks for the link. YouTube sent a notice of the video yesterday, but it was marked private. Couldn't figure out how to check it out. Looks like a great machine with the slant bed and the ability to use TTS tool holders.

You can buy good parts or you can buy cheap parts, but you can't buy good cheap parts.

    I hope it has a 5C spindle.

I also hope that the operator takes the key out of the chuck the next time they make a video.

According to the comments in the blog posting, the lathe will have 5C standard and a tailstock.

If they'd accept it, I'd probably put down a deposit today.

After watching the video the tormach operator appears to loading the stock into a D1-4 camlock 6" self centering 3 jaw chuck. I guess all those years of studing football film in univ and pro have paid off somewhere when watching the operator load the stock.

If the D1-4 Camlock is correct, then the same chucks, including the Royal pneumatic 5C closer that fits on the D1-4 nose of my manual 12x36 lathe could be used.

Mike, 5C comment wasn't on the blog at the time I posted here. ("Timing is everything" I like to say...)

Don, since the necessary drawtube length is likely to be different on the Tormach, why wouldn't you just adapt your Royal closer to work directly with the built-in 5C spindle?

What built-in 5C spindle? On most Chicom lathes like my 12x36 there is no built-in 5C spindle but rather a Morse #5 taper. One must use a 5C to Morse #5 adapter that must be removed before using the D1-4 camlock spindle. The Royal pneumatic closer with D1-4 5C- spindle nose eliminated having to knock out the 5C to Morse #5 adapter every time I wanted to mount a chuck after using 5C collets. Also by just adjusting the pressure regulator I can dial-in just the amount of force needed to close my 5C collets which is perfect for holding thin walled Turcite parts I machine without deformation to the part. In addition the pneumatic closer just pulls out from the rear of the lathe without having to unattach linkages such as with a lever type closer. Notice I modified the Royal closer so that there is through access from the rear. It seems the lawyers lips prevented Royal from selling their closer with a through hole, however it was easy enough to machine a hole in the rear dual action pneumatic actuator.
