    Wizards for drilling

    Hello,

I am just getting started with milling....and need to drill/cut into 304 SS.

I understand that for SS work, one needs to keep moving or the pc will harden, so I figured for a drilling operation I would try to use the peck option that I see on the wizards opposed to trying manually (I have the dial pendant on my Tormach), but looking through the wizards, I see all the wizards expect you to drill in a hole pattern, whereas I need to do one hole. Maybe too easy for anyone with more than a month of experience...

Anyway, which wizard is the best for this? Right now I am using the "hole in a row" and tricking it by saying I want 2 holes (2nd one being in air at 1 deg off the work pc).

    Thanks

    Hi Paul,
sorry but I don't know the wizards well enough to help you. I suspect there are quite a few folks here on the forum that can write the G-code from scratch and get the results needed. Sorry, I can't help you there either I still need to understand that better.
But your signature says you have SprutCam. That would create the program for pecking or deep drilling for you. I do know how to do what you need in SprutCam and can help you there but I think we would need to move the conversation over to SprutCAM - CNCzone.com-The Largest Machinist Community on the net!
Sorry, not much help at the moment, but I'll keep an eye out over at the SprutCam forum if your interested in getting into Sprut a little more.

    Wizards for drilling

    Hi Paul,

I just looked at my mach3 setup and chose the Row bolt pattern. If you want to do only one hole set your x,y coordinates for where you want to drill the hole, set hole distance to 0, set angle to 0, set number of holes to 1. please note that you must press enter each time you
enter anything in any of the boxes. You then choose your cutting info ( don't forget to press enter after each time) and you should be able to drill one hole at a locahion ob your choosing.

    How about something like:

    G0G90G54X?Y?
    G43Z.1H?
    Z.1
    G83X?Y?Z-?R.1Q?F?
    G0G80

You fill in the data at the question marks.

    Thanks for the replys...

I go into G code like Steve suggests, I'll try the row bolt pattern again. It might be that I missed something, but I thought i tried just just as Erie suggests and I got an error when I chose 1 hole and "posted" the code. But, I'll try that again.

Gerry, I'll see you on the other forum...Sprut looks to be a steep learning curve!

Go into the NewFangled wizard and use the multy hole app. Only click on the first hole with its cords and set all the rest (hole depth, peck depth ect, ect) and yuo will be good to go.

You could even use it if you had multy parts loaded on a plate to drill one hole in each part.

in sprut if you just set your drill to a "deep drill" in the strategies section you can set a peck retract depths. The simulation doesnt show it but the post processor will put the code in to perform it.

I just watched the tutorial on drilling in Sprutcam. What a frigging nightmare.

It took over 8 minutes to define the tools and drill the holes. I can do the same operations in GibbsCam in 2 minutes or less. Maybe someone with more experience with SprutCam can do it quicker, but in Gibbs, I don't have to continuously change pages to do what I want to do.

I need to say though, I don't know the pricing of SprutCam, but for the price of GibbsCam, it had better make it easier and faster. I have a little over $18,000.00 in my GibbsCam.

Wow! $18,000.00??? I had no idea you could even spend that much. Ive seen up to $5000. Sprut from tormach, if you own one of their mills, is just under $1000.00!

Even if it takes 10 minutes to setup that spot and drill operation in Sprut, I think the 500% increase in setup time would be easier for me to swallow than the 1800% in cost of software.

    Conversational Maybe?

For the everyday, simpler programming such as this ... if you want a little more than "wizards" ... take a look at Kipware® Conversational at KipwareM Conversational Programming Software for CNC Milling Manufacturing

Our new release really takes conversational programming to a new level ... save cycles like this for easy recall and edit ... copy cycles ... and more ... all on your PC in the comfort of your home / office.

For non-traditional shapes ... the included SketchPad can take your DXF or your drawing and easily create a toolpath.

For me there is no need for wizards or CAM for just drilling holes. I program drilling in G-code.

Actually, $18,000.00 is not that expensive. I know guys who have spent upwards of $60,000.00 per seat for some really high end software.

I had GibbsCam when I had my shop, and when I sold it the guy who bought it was a Mastercam user so I brought my Gibbs home with me.

I didn't just buy Gibbs to program my Tormach
