Removing Chips From Under Your 770

Okay, Ive had my 770 for about three weeks, and I added an enclosure to help contain the coolant and chips.

One issue I see on the 770 is "How to remove chips from the trough under the machine". This issue is compounded if you have an enclosure, and when the machine is against a wall.

My lowly solution was to drill one 5/8" hole in the front of my chip-tray in the location shown below. Then, I took a piece of .500" 6061 rod about four feet long, and threaded the end in 1/2-13. Finally, fab a plate about 2" x 7", and drill and tap a 1/2-13 hole off to one side of the plate.

What you end up with, is a "hoe" that looks like it was fabricated after a night of heavy drinking.

    To use:

Remove 5/8" plug from front of chip-tray.

    Insert threaded rod through hole.

Screw threaded rod into plate on inside. (easily held by hand)

Push rod into machine. (front to back)

Almost all chips will be removed from the trough in one pass.

Hope this helps. If there was an easy way to remove the chips, I didn't see it.

Can you attach magnets with epoxy to the plate and just leave it in the machine when done. The hole will be lined up for the next use every time. Not sure if this would work, but it a cool idea

IME magnets anywhere inside the stand become covered with steel chips and fines in no time (unless you just run non-ferrous), but I like the idea.

Maybe if there was a short bit of rod attached to the blade section that could more or less plug the hole when retracted, then the push rod attached to that? As long as the hole is above the waterline it wouldn't need to be tightly sealed.

Another idea might be to switch it around to a pull-rod, leaving the rod attached all the time and the blade at the back of the machine when not in use. You might have to be careful the rod clears enough to not block coolant and chips.

I use similar "Hoe's" for removing chips from the lathe bed and the bed under the bandsaw, I just let them dry out well first.
