    PCNC 770: beginner questions

I just received a Tormach 770. I have a great deal of experience with Solidworks and a moderate amount with manual milling. However, I am new to CAM and CNC milling.

    A few basic questions:

    1. I have the coolant package, I am using the suggested coolant (Premier 600) at a 30:1 ratio. Do I need to wipe down or wash off the system when I am done for the day? It seems to leave a film, and I feel odd about leave something that's 97% water on the ways.

    2. I have heard (read) that some coolants can be a health hazard. Does this apply to this coolant, in the flood setup, with relatively low usage (<5 hours/week)? Are the any good references that I can look at?

    3. Do you use any extra software to figure out speeds and feeds? Like G-Wizard? Any others worth suggesting? (I prefer free, obviously)

    4. How important is it to use silicone on the bolts of the chip trays and back splash? Did you suggest sealing the seams as well?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Tormach literature says leave the coolant in place. I like to wipe the coolant off the table and spindle and apply a thin coat of oil. I also oil the tooling.

Check the MSDS for the coolant. Tormach has the MSDS sheet on line.

I use GWizard. I like it. It is worth the money.

If you don't mind leaks don't use the silicone. If you want a chance at water tight use the silicone liberally.

Highly recommend G-Wizard. They have a 30 day trial and hobbyst pricing if I remember correctly.

Honestly, I think I lossed many times the cost of G-Wizard in dulled/ruined tools from not taking agressive enough cuts. Once I started using the program, I got much better. It also has good chip thinning calculations as well.

Re coolant, I switched to Koolmist 77(thnk thats right) and its worked pretty good for me. Reason I went for it, is its extremely safe from what I understand... and it doesnt grow bacteria and smell like some others do.

The stuff I used before it was supposed to be safe as well, but it bothered me when I used it. The Koolmist does not.

SILCONE that baby up! I am referring to the machine stand. Unfortunately coolant leaked into the cabinet where the PC controller was located. So I dismantled the entire machine stand top covers and sealed every single contact point. Never had a leak since.

    Thanks for the answers.

One more question about Gwizard. It seems that you need an internet connection to validate the software. I would like to put Gwizard on the PC that runs that PCNC, which is not online.

Is there any way around this?

My only option now is to put it on a laptop and bring that back and forth from my desk to the shop...

You might want to ask Bob Warfield that question, if only to let him know that the Internet connection is a problem for you. It is for me too and I'm not too crazy about the annual lease pricing structure either.

Me as well, particularly since I am just a hobbyist. He does have a program now that if you purchase 1 year, you can continue to use it without renewing with reduced max HP. I think 1HP. That works fine for me, as anything more than that will nearly stall the spindle. With that said, I purchased a 3 year subscription.

Re the internet thing, I think it would be good if he came out with a stand alone version for the lower rated HP.

I purchased a 3-year license too, I think, but am not a fan of that business model. Annual maintenance at $25 or so would be OK, but have to buy it all over again every 1 or 3 years rubs me the wrong way.

Plus, what happens if he is no longer marketing the software? Does it just stop working at the end of the license period?
