Sounds like a resonance effect (chatter).

A 17mm slot 0.025" deep with a 4 flute carbide gives 0.0034 chipload. It's only 0.2327 HP, which should be well within the limits of the Tormach without causing it too much fuss due to rigidity.

Could be something to do with recutting chips if they're not well cleared too, I suppose. FWIW, stainless likes LOTs of coolant.

Cheers,

BW

I use G-Wizard all the time and havent opened machinerys since i got it. but I have generaly found much better performance in 1018 with the chip load turned down. Here are some pics with the reccomended output the tool is the "short" TTS and the part was clamped directly to the table. Some of the cuts were slots but not all. I don't think recutting is the whole problem.

Responding to post 26, the picture looks like the tool may be zero or negative rake. My understanding is that those tools demand very high rigidity. I wonder if you might get better results with a sharp positive rake tool?

Might be positive rake due to the insert. I have a Helimill that is that way. The insert looks mounted with no rake but the edge is raked.

Looking at the picture of the tooling marks, I have a hard time saying for sure, but it could be some chatter there. I will introduce a calculator before too long that will tell you the best spindle speed to minimize it given the measured spacing of the marks.

You might try a corncob rougher. They're a lot less prone to chatter and cut really well. I've gotten a lot of mileage from mine, although I also like my little 5/8" Helimill a lot.

Cheers,

BW

Bob, is your G-Wizard an app that is run on a PC or a web applet? If I try and buy, do I need to pay the $59 every year or is it a one time purchase?

Thanks, David

Yes, but it doesn't look like the insert has rake either. It looks to be flat -- maybe the poster can clarify on that issue.

It looks as though it might be the center cut version of the tool that has one cutter laying length wise to allow for center cutting?

David, I won't let the cat (too far) out of the bag, but sign up for the trial. You'll hear about the "Spring Deal" for hobbyists.

Best,

BW

It is the Tormach TTS 17MM center cut.

My first few parts looked like that and found out shortly it was due to backlash in my X & Y axis. Just thought I'd throw that out there, might need adjustment.
