Cool Rising Prices

Some one needs to pay for added costs.

In a prior post someone predicted that the spindle upgrade and Z travel upgrades would become a standard feature at an increased cost. The ads showing the machine for 6800.00 are strictly taken from traditional Detroit auto promotions where they show the deluxe model, but quote the " no hub caps " price. Realistically, if you want a machine ready to work, the price will be on the high side of 12000.00.

This is simply not true. If you look at the banner at the top of the page for this forum, what you see is what you get. It's a fully functional machine. I know I bought one, how about you? If you want bells and whistles then they come extra - as always.

I can imagine you sitting cross legged on the floor in front of this unit, but if you want to stand up and run it, add;
Stand & guard 1550.00
vise 595.00
machine arm 295.00
computer & cables 1000.00
proprietary tool set 750.00
Plus a myriad of clamps, cutters, ad infinitum
My point is not to put them down, but be realistic about what the true cost of a functioning machine will be. As I said before, its the old Detroit game to get you into the dealer with the " no hub caps" price and send you home with the "20 year undercoating", " extended warranty" etc.

Stand & guard 1550.00 - not essential. Much lower cost options are possible.
vise 595.00 - much cheaper options, not from Tormach.
machine arm 295.00 - A bell or possibly a whistle.
computer & cables 1000.00 - Most people already have one.
proprietary tool set 750.00 - not essential, a few R8 collets will do.
Plus a myriad of clamps, cutters, ad infinitum - much cheaper options, not from Tormach.

Call it the old Detroit game if you like. How would you propose they handle the sale of extras or none essential items. I call it tailoring to your needs. It is perfectly clear that the price is for the base machine. I have seen no ads with the base price splashed across the "delux model". Perhaps you could provide a link to one.

I have no problem with critical posts directed at Tormach, but they at least have to have some foundation.

I am a new Tormach owner and the cost has been about $8K to get started. The only extras have been a PC (used IBM $250), stand (free + paint $5.00), vise (used $100), Misc tooling (Enco, CDCO, etc $500). Most anyone should be able to get up and running for about the same cost. Sure you could be lazy and have one stop shopping but why? A couple hours shopping either online or locally will yield a very good payback (based on your example about $4k). Where else are you going to make $1k per hour???. Just my opinion.

Look like I spoke to soon. Look at the new banner at the top of this forum page. It is a bit naughty. Shouldn't they be saying something like "from $7,480", which everybody understands as; what you see is not necessarily what you get.

Maybe its my fault- they might have taken my post as advice. The machine pictured in the 7480.00 ad will cost you over 15000.00 according to their website. As I said before, I have nothing against their products- they are probably as good a value for the $ as any out there. What I object to is the advertising which can easily lead a newbie down a garden path.
