largest stock you guys are turning? Slantbed15

just curious what the largest stock some of you guys are turning, according to tormach no more than 6" diameter stock but they advertise the heck out of the 15" swing. pretty disappointed if this is true.

The largest I've turned so far is small lengths of 2" OD 6061 and brass. I did turn some 3-on OD 6061 that was 12" long gripped by ~1/2-in in the 3J chuck and unsupported by a tailstock. That wasn't too bad and the time the work popped out of the chuck was actually pretty uneventful. I was turning at pretty slow speed though.

Largest I have turned was 4.5" 6061 and 2.625" stainless 303.

6 inch 6061 round bar is largest I've turned. The 15" is nice to have a combo of QCTP and gang tooling (I don't have a turret).

Thanks guys, they advertise the heck out that 15" swing so I figured a 11"-12" round stock would be no problem.

They should put 6" max stock in there somewhere.

I think it's common for manufactures to specify both swing over bed and swing over carriage. Tormach advertises 6.2 inch diameter over the carriage so while you could face a 11-12" piece 6.2 looks like the max for turning. I used to own a gap bed lathe, you could remove a piece of the bed near the head stock. It was useful for machining flywheels and brake drums and discs that were too large to fit the bed

It looks like the turret on mine can turn an OD of about 15" and nearly 2-1/2" deep in Z before the work would run into the gang tooling block on the slide. I don't have a quick-change toolpost setup on mine but you might get close to a 15-in OD with that as well.

Are larger chucks even available ?

Shars has 8" and 10" D1-4 chucks.

A D1-4 faceplate might work well for something like a flywheel too. Those are available in 12-in diameter, I think.
